The problem of “wireless overcrowding”

So what happens in this day and age with the increasing amount of digital wireless devices having to share a limited resource such as the radio spectrum? And all in the same proximity? And all unaware of each other’s existence?

You can imagine how chaotic and unsecure radio communication becomes.

Getting creative with radio waves: Spread Spectrum Technology

In a channelised system, the band limited transmissions determine the upper limit on the frequency deviation and therefore the data rate.

With spread spectrum on the other hand, we do not constrain the bandwidth in the same manner.

This leads to some interesting benefits depending on what is required, for example in FHSS and DSSS below.

Frequency Hopping Spread Spectrum (FHSS) Direct Sequence Spread Spectrum (DSSS)
  • No channel switching or management
  • Multiple equipment use in one area
  • Mitigation of signal multipath effects
  • Resistant to burst noise
  • Signal less visible to other receivers
  • High sensitivity / range
  • Secure transmission
